My Family

My Hobbies

Just a bit about myself and family
I born born and raised in Midland, Western Australia, went to the Midland Primary and High School in 1944 -54. Worked for several companies until I enlisted in August 1958.
Went to Queenscliffe for my Recruit Training, posted back to WA, at 5 BOD Midland, as a Storewoman then telephoniste,(living at home in Midland), transfered to 17 National Service unit as telephoniste, Quarters were now 50 WRAAC Barracks, Karrakatta.

Had bought myself a Vespa motor scooter, easier to travel to Swanbourne than the buses. Another of the girls, Lesley, had a Lambretta motor scooter, needless to say we weren't at the Barracks on weekends, unless On Duty. I can still remember we ran some raffles to enable us to have a TV in the Rec Room. Knowing my Great-Uncle was in the Trotting world at Gloucester Park Raceway. A quick few phone calls and four of us Girls headed off on Scooters for the Saturday night Trots. Remember we had about 40 Pound to use, from all the girls as we had put in for the Kitty, all proceeds to the TV Fund. Believe it we had the final Quinella of the night. Yes I can still remember the "trotters" names - Nelson Park and Swallowtail, paying a substanial price and we had the TV the next week. With thanks to Uncle Harry.

Then posted to HQ at 1RTB, Kapooka, as telephoniste. Married John in 1960, at the OPD Chapel, Kapooka, we lived in Wagga Wagga, Mt Austin and Ashmont, having the four children, Leanne, Gary (died 40 hrs old), John Jr and Donna. John was posted to Sth Vietnam in April '68 and returned home May '69.

We were then moved to Puckapunyal, Victoria for 2 years, then up to DSU, Rockhampton, Qld for 4 more years, until John was discharged in June '76. Returning to John's hometown, buying our home.

During my home life at Wagga Wagga, I became re-interested in Cake Decorating, making many cakes for all occassions over our stays in Puckapunyal and Rockhampton, I had begun decorating lessons prior to my enlistment.

While here at Tyalgum, the vegetables were plentiful, I started making a few jars of pickles, some with disasterous results until I received my grandmothers recipes. Of course some had to be modified, "cooking in the square 4 gallon kero tin on bricks in the backyard", altered to my stainless steel boiler and gas stove. I have sold many hundreds of jars with many phoning from all over Oz, to be sent with list given.

Started into small craft items and still a dab hand,(if I ever get off the computer).

I have added some family photos and also of my cakes, listed under Hobbies, I've made and decorated. One I took to England in '97 (Marian) and decorated over there (15 Kgs). Cakes have been flown over the world, 2 Tasmania, 5 Western Australia, 3 England, 1 Scotland and to USA. The women in Tyalgum call me the "Cake & Pickle Specialist", don't know whether it is a good or bad thing. The WRAAC members will be able to let me know, when I take a few baskets of assorted pickles to Brisbane and fruit cakes included, for the Christmas Party in November..
